Nuclear Lab in Idaho Using Jobcasts to Recruit

Jobs in Pods has generated interest from the typical Fortune 500 Co's but when the folks at Idaho National Laboratory called, I knew this was no ordinary client. Just goes to prove that jobcasting is great for ANY kind of company in ANY kind of Industry.

They recognize that the job market is changing and with Nuclear & Chemical Engineers hard to find they've taken the step into recruiting 2.0. They are now a forward thinking recruiting organization in my opinion. Listen to their jobcast.

New Recruiter Blog from Kristi Young @ Technisource

i don`t consider myself a writer at all, just a pretentious coffee addict who needs justification for her vices. the cigarette smoke looks creative in pictures with me at my vintage typewriter, rotary phone, they`ll call me an artist before they label me a degenerate, and all i have to do is be clever. i am a poser and will someday rule the world!

Who's Being Hired Online?

Weddles just came out with this interesting survey. The responses below were collected from employers and recruiters between March 10 and May 10, 2007 for the following question: Of the openings you've posted online, were they mostly:

  • Hourly positions? 7.7%;
  • Entry-level professional positions? 23%;
  • Mid-level professional positions? 46.2%;
  • Senior-level professional positions? 7.7%;
  • Managerial positions? 11.5%;
  • Executive positions? 3.9%.

    What the Findings Mean

    Clearly, conventional wisdom is correct. The Internet has, in fact, become an accepted way to find employment opportunities in the full range of permanent positions available in today's organizations. We can, nevertheless, draw some important insights from the poll results.

    Experience counts.

    The more senior you are, the more likely you are to be recruited on the Internet & up to a point. Employers and recruiters fill more mid level professional positions online than they do entry level positions, despite the widespread belief that recent college graduates are much more likely to use the Web for their job search. Beyond that point, however, the bottom drops out; just a handful of our respondents with senior level openings (7.7%) rely on the Internet to fill them.

    Pay Per Action from Indeed

    As a job board owner I currently pay Indeed.com money on a pay-per-click basis to drive traffic to my sites. Now they have introduced a new way to advertise. Pay-Per-Action. PPA lets employers and or job boards pay when a job seeker completes an action...say, register on the site or applies for a job.

    This is an interesting play by Indeed. I read on another recruiting blog that it may be "ahead of its time". Certainly some employers will not understand it, but I do believe its another cost effective way of getting candidates to your jobs. You can read more about here on Indeed's blog.

    5 reasons to use niche job boards

    I saw this article today on Career Journal about using the niche job boards instead of the big guys like Monster & CareerBuilder.

    I plucked out a few of the quotes for the top 5 reasons to use niche job boards like AllCountyJobs.com.

    1. "I learned that you are a lot more apt to find companies that are serious about hiring and know exactly what they want at the niche sites," says Ms. Rempel, now a manager at iWin Inc."

    2. "Job seekers who limit their searches to traditional online hotspots may be missing out on the best career opportunities, as more employers are advertising openings on Web sites that cater to specific career fields and geographic locations."

    3. "Mr. Hunter and other recruiting professionals who use this kind of targeted recruiting strategy are helping to boost traffic in the niche category at a faster rate than the big boards."

    4. "Corporate hiring managers also say they're using niche job sites more because the big boards produce too many unqualified applicants."

    5. "If you put the right jobs on the right niche board, you can get a better return on your investment than broadcasting your jobs to the big, general boards," says Ray Schreyer, manager of Internet recruiting at International Business Machines Corp."

    Not your daddy's job description

    I've written a lot about bad job descriptions, so when I saw the following ad on MyBlogLog about 2 web developers they are looking to hire, it caught my eye as an example of the new way to write them.

    Not only do they use words like "wicked good", "gobs of money" and "kick-ass", but they target their own customers with the ad by placing it right in your face on the MyBlogLog site.

    Kudos to them.

    I'd hate to be the HR Manager at Disney

    The fly just returned from his vacation at Disney World with the family. Mrs Fly and Little Fly went too. While there, he couldn't help but notice what a massive undertaking staffing a bunch of theme parks and resorts must be.

    He was impressed by the "cast members" who served and pampered him. They were all polite and their service was top notch. But where do you find almost 60,000 hourly workers in such a small region of Florida?

    The answer: anywhere and everywhere.

    The fly asked around. Many were local folks but a lot were college students, International workers and a variety of contractors. Disney has a large college internship program so they bring in kids by the truck loads. A student can literally do any job imaginable from manning a cash register to waiting tables to working on a boat. One night he ate at a Canadian Steak place in Epcot. The waitress from was from Nova Scotia.

    Can you say global recruiting?

    The fly was curious. How long have you worked here he asked? Do they give you room and board?

    Yes she replied. She's part of a year long international work exchange and they give her a place to live (10 mins away) and feed her. She took the job for little adventure and meet new people and she loves it.

    On the Disney web site you can read more about their internship programs and such. The fly also found some buzz on one person's experience working there. Interesting read.

    Would you want to recruit for Disney? It must be difficult and rewarding at times. At least that's what this fly heard on their walls.

    Blogosphere request...anyone out there know a Disney recruiter? If so, send them my way. Would love to talk to them.
