SEO blogging tips from Matt Cutts (video)

Check out Matt Cutts at WordCamp where he discusses SEO tips for bloggers for about an hour.

Blogging alert: Rss feeds

If you're a blogger who's interested in optimizing your site for search engines, make sure you have enabled your full feed in your RSS settings. Turns out that Google only indexes your rss feed, not your blog, in their blog search engine. So if you only enable a portion of your feed you are missing out on potential traffic.

In blogger those settings are in the "Site Feed" section.

SEO help from Topix

Link building is an important part of SEO for any web site. Getting quality inbound links from related websites is important for ranking high in the search engines. There are a number of sites such as Cheezhead's wiki that you can take advantage of by entering your own information --- aka the right keywords --- that you want to rank well for.

Topix.com is one of those sites. They now offer a forum for Human Resource news that anyone can post to. It's got a google page rank of 5 so it's a quality inbound link. I use it to post my press releases and other announcements.

Blogs: SEO in Action

Blogs are great for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Here's a case in point.

Job in Pods, which is only a few days old is already producing keyword search results. Take a look at the image below. A search for "rf engineering jobs march 2007" produced an organic link back to the post I did for some T-Mobile jobs. Just another reason to podcast your jobs.

The future of SEO

When Danny Sullivan, 'the king of all search media guy' talks, I listen. His daily search cast is a daily ritual for me each weekday. Anyway he wrote something on his blog recently which caught my eye.

What's significant about personalization, however, is the direction that it sets for Google in the future. Google has been very cautious about introducing personalization into the search experience but expect the degree of personalization to increase as Google gets more confident in their ability to present truly personalized and relevant results. And that signals the end of the universal or monolithic search result. As I've said a number of times, that has significant implications for search engine optimization.

Once Google starts making personalized search results a part of everyone's page, SEO is going to take a giant turn. Where's it going? I cant say for sure. But it should be an interesting ride.

SEO tip for your Domain name

There's a recent patent by Google which indicates that the length of your domain’s registration is important for ranking. Why? Because many spam sites have short registrations and a longer one indicates that you’re building a site with substance and are in it for the long haul. I'd recommend at least minimum of 2 years for your domain name and if you can afford it, go for 10 years.

Human Resource Experts: exact match domain

This is a perfect example of something called an exact match domain which Oaseo alluded to recently.

http://www.humanresourceexperts.com/

Created by the marketing company HRmarketer, its SEO in the most purest form. Do a Google search on human resource experts and its the #1 result.

Note that the keywords are not only in the domain but part of the title on the page and mentioned at least 2 times in the opening paragraph.

And if you are an HR Expert you can get added to their directory.

New PPC Program for Amazon.com

Clickriver Ads is an advertising program - currently in beta - that allows businesses to place sponsored links on Amazon.com, next to search results and on product detail pages.... It's a closed beta at the moment.

This could be a significant traffic driver for many websites who utilize PPC. I wonder if advertisers will be able to place ads next to boolk categories or even specific book. That would be cool.

Google Adds Blogs to News Alerts

I love Google's News alerts. They keep me updated on the job search industry.

Now in addition to traditional online news sources, they have added blogs to the mix. Just enter the keyword, and google will email you items with that keyword from blogs or other news sites.

This is great news for bloggers, keep those keyword posts coming!

ScrapeApe

This seems like a strange service to offer. I'm not sure why they charge for something that require basic webmaster skills to implement.

SEO Tip: keywords in file names

Matt Cutts, who is Google's webmaster go-to-guy confirms that keywords placed in file names helps with search engine ranking. Here's the quote;

"Most bloggy sites tend to have words from the title of a post in the url; having keywords from the post title in the url also can help search engines judge the quality of a page."

And here's the full post.

Most blogs already include keywords in their file names for each post. But if you are creating static html pages (or dynamic url's) , it's imperative you name them appropriately to rank well.
