Avoiding Career Scams When Being Recruited
In today's
difficult economic times it is important to avoid a career scam, says
TCMI, a Houston-based career marketing and management firm. A career scam can happen to any unsuspecting jobseeker who does not investigate the company they are going to work for prior to accepting a new position. In other words, if an individual has been out of work for any extended period of time, it is natural for that person to want to accept the first offer that is presented to them. Unfortunately, that particular company or role within that company may not be the right fit and complaints could begin happening quickly.
Some employers begin staffing or
recruiting even while other departments are being laid off or reduced. Be sure your potential new employer is on sound ground financially. Finally, you will want to know that there is room for advancement with your potential new employer. Complaints of not being able to advance unfortunately happen when the employee has been with the company for about one year.
Fully investigating a company prior to accepting any offer will significantly reduce the potential of walking into an employment scam. Be alert to a company's environment: is it an atmosphere that is conducive to growth and free from complaints? Does the potential new employer have the financial strength to survive difficult economic times? Jobseekers, too, should not be afraid to ask questions of the hiring manager that will allow a way to measure employee satisfaction. Remember – you are your own best advocate.

Recruiting For Veterans
Simply Hired, a comprehensive search engine for jobs based in Mountain View, California, has announced a new job search offering to help in the
recruitment of veterans. According to a company press release, the filter provides results from
DirectEmployers Association’s list of over 400 federal contractors and "vet-friendly" employers, who take affirmative action to employ and advance in employment veterans in accordance with Affirmative Action Programs, the Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), and the
Jobs for Veterans Act.
With military returning to the U.S. from Iraq and Afghanistan, there is a growing need for veteran employment. The United States currently is home to over 23 million veterans who have served active duty in the U.S. armed forces, according to the Office of Veteran Affairs. This large subset of the population has highly transferable military skills such as the capacity to learn new skills quickly, a strong sense of teamwork, and leadership abilities. The active security clearances that returning veterans have are also in high demand by employers. This new filter will provide a venue for veterans to perform job searches from select companies who are dedicated to hiring veterans and advancing their careers.
The company been lauded as one of the "50 Coolest Websites" by
Time Magazine and declared "Best of the Web" by
Business Week. Simply Hired has raised $17.7M in funding from News Corporation's Fox Interactive Media, Foundation Capital, Garage Technology Ventures and individual investors.

Wisconsin Hospitals Focused on Recruiting
While the population and demand for healthcare professionals in
Wisconsin are growing, hospitals are having trouble filling open positions. Because of this, many hospitals are focusing on
recruiting efforts.
Currently, 5.6 million people live in Wisconsin, up 5.7 percent from 2000, and hospitals are having to compete more than usual to find perspective employees. The state is specifically seeing a shortage of physical therapists, pharmacists and registered nurses.
Two of the state's major hospitals,
Franciscan Skemp and
Gunderson Lutheran are amping up their recruiting efforts to help fill open positions. Both hospitals say having higher learning institutions to help attract candidates helps, according to an article by
WXOW.
"The universities and technical colleges have been able to draw us the applicants we need, but everything as it going, it's going to be a challenge," Frank Perez-Guerra, Gundersen Lutheran's Director of Human Resources, said in the article.
Franciscan Skemp helps its recruiting efforts by offering scholarships to students, and both hospitals offer competitive pay and security to attract potential employees.
Despite shortages, patients shouldn't have to worry about a lack of care, as there will always be a need for healthcare and healthcare professionals.
"We work very hard to make sure we have the appropriate staff and are able to take care of our patients," Perez-Guerra added in the article.
Franciscan Skemp doctors have said they are not experiencing hiring shortages as much as other hospitals in the state. Gundersen Lutheran is particularly hopeful universities will add more teaching staff to train more students and help with the shortage.
