Pains of Recruiting, part 1

At the ERE conference I sat in on a sessions led by Kevin Wheeler about the challenges of recruiting and workforce planning. He had each table come up with their own "pains". Here is the first of 4 videos from that session. I thought other recruiters would find it interesting.

Video: Dr. John Sullivan

John Sullivan is one of my HR Heroes. He speaks the truth about human resources. Sometimes his views get him in trouble with the establishment but his ideas and beliefs are what HR needs to hear if they want to become a player. At the recent ERE expo I interviewed him after his presentation.

Odd things I learned at ERE

Last week's ERE fall expo was an interesting experience. I had some great conversations, heard lots of stories and met interesting people. But these 4 things were perhaps the oddest stuff I heard all week.

1. I actually met a 22 year old who DOESN'T have either a MySpace page or Facebook profile.

2. I learned a new word called "drunk-texting" (no, it wasn't me)

3. One twenty-something female I met admitted to texting 6500 times in one month. (that's mind boggling)

4. A vendor told me the story of how he found his latest sales person --- at a bar. Talk about innovative sourcing! A sales manager was at a bar after work with some colleagues. They struck up a conversation with another group of people who were having a good time. One of them was a 27 year old woman who sold radio advertising. He gave her his card and she looked him up a few days later. He offered her a job.

Video: Joel Cheesman on the Hotseat

I thought it was time to turn the tables on Joel Cheesman at ERE last week. So i put him on the Hotseat and he sounds off on the future of Monster, Jobster, Job Boards, SEO and his beloved Indians. Fortunately for him he did not predict an Indians victory. Turns out that was a good idea.

The most interesting phrase overheard at ERE

On friday morning, the last day of the ERE expo, I went down to grab a quick breakfast before my morning train back home. I picked up a croissant and heard Neal Bruce of Monster speaking in the main room. So I stepped in.

He was having the sparse crowd recite some phrases about recruiting/monster when he told the crowd to chant;

"Joel Cheesman Secretly loves Monster."

And the crowd went along.

Alas, I dont think Joel was there to hear it.

Random video from ERE

By all accounts the ERE show in DC was a terrific event. The city was great. The hotel was first class and there was plenty of interesting conversation. It's size is very manageable. Not too big (like shrm) or too small like some other conferences. The ERE staff told me about 1,000 people were there (including those from about 100 vendors). I hope to attend the next one in San Diego.

Here's a brief video with a few of the sites and sounds including the expo setup and a few of the speakers.

Taking the train to the recruiter's game

Tomorrow I'm taking my first Amtrak Acela to Washington DC to attend the ERE fall expo. I am shunning the plane in favor of the train. As I start to travel more I am realizing that the experience of flying sucks. So a short drive to my local train station is in order. I'm looking forward to a relaxing ride with no long security lines.

While at the expo I'll be doing lots of interviews with recruiting leaders and taking lots of video from the expo floor. So stay tuned to this blog for some interesting recruiter content.

Now if I could only get my Redskins to get back on track, but that's another story.

New ATS tool: Catch the Best

Here's a new low cost ATS tool that is targeting small businesses. According to their founder, Benjamin Curtis;

Catch the Best is a collaborative applicant tracking system (ATS) built just for small businesses. Basically, that means it gives you a place to track your job postings and the applicants for your open positions, but without all the extra junk (and extra cost!) that you get from the guys trying to sell you an "enterprise-class" product.

Recently I listened to Lou Adler's podcast on next generation recruiting techniques. It was a good listen so I wanted to pass it along. You'll have to register first to hear it. Here's the link.

Aquent's YouTube Job ad

Staffing firm Aquent just put out their first video job ad on YouTube. Here's a look:

Not a bad first attempt. Most of the background stunts were a little corny but I like how they involved everyone in the office. And they shot it in multiple locations so you can see the office environment. Most importantly the last shot tells job seekers how to apply.

I'll give it a grade of: B minus.

Quoted in Workforce Magazine

Workforce Magazine has a new article out in which I'm quoted for Jobs in Pods.

Job Boards Tap Facebook For Gen Y Workers

Recruiters are getting a vital new tool to hire Generation Y workers as major job boards such as CareerBuilder, Jobster, Yahoo HotJobs, and begin linking to the social networking site Facebook.

Monster spamming the Irish

Luck of the Irish?

Michele Neylon, a blogger from Ireland says Monster is spamming him. Worse, now they're trying to cover their tracks.

I guess there's no pot of gold at the end of this rainbow.

(ok that was lame, but I couldn't think of another anecdote!)
