Non Profit Jobs: Top 10 Myths

Do you know what it takes to get the non profit jobs (http://jobs.heart.org) available in your community?

Many people have a pre-disposed vision of what it's like to work for a nonprofit organization. Maybe you think that the environment is more laid back, that all the staff members are nice to be around all the time, or that you'll be working with a bunch of volunteers.

However, most of these notions are inaccurate and don't represent what it's actually like to work for a nonprofit. Just like any other company, each nonprofit is different, and every factor of your work environment can differ from job to job.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the 10 biggest myths about working in the nonprofit industry include:
  1. Non-profits are laid back, less professional, and less rigorous.
  2. Non-profits are mainly staffed by volunteers.
  3. Caring about money is frowned upon.
  4. Passion is an important qualification for a nonprofit job.
  5. Nonprofits are staffed by sunny, caring earth-mother types.
  6. Nonprofits are run by consensus and have non-hierarchical structures.
  7. Nonprofits aren't managed well.
  8. Nonprofits will hire whoever they can find.
  9. Nonprofit employees have better work-life balance.
  10. Nonprofit work is centered around service work in communities.
